| Decugnano is a name dates from at least eight centuries indicating the area where the estate has been built. The origin of vine-growing dates back to ancient times and the Decugnano wine had been the subject-matter of a contract of the XIIIth century, when the vineyard belonged to the Church and its name was ?Santa Maria di Decugnano?. Nevertheless, some archaeological Etruscan finds indicate that this land had been cultivated in earlier times. Claudio Barbi became the owner of the estate in 1973. He bought it because of the excellent wine produced, which was counted among the best produced in the region of Orvieto. It was only in 1978, after a long period of reorganisation within the business, that Decugnano dei Barbi launched its products on the market: a white wine, a red wine (among the first quality wines of that area) and the first ?champenois? produced in Umbria. It was in 1981 that Decugnano dei Barbi produced the first bottle of Italian wine obtained by the means of the use of the ?muffa nobile? (botrytis cinerea) like the famous wines from Sauternes in France: Pourriture Noble. Until that moment, nobody had realised that the Botrytis Cinerea was manifested in the vineyards of some areas around Orvieto. The interest in the production of an ever increasingly better quality was acheived in 1988 with the production of IL Rosso, a complex wine characterized by its refining in barrels for 24 months. In 1994, IL Bianco was produced. In 2001, after a experimentation, started the production of Pinot Nero. Today, Decugnano dei Barbi is famous and esteemed both in Italy and abroad for its high quality wines. |
