Producer Proud new parents Veronique Abbadie and Jerome Aguirre met while studying viticulture and enology at the University of Bordeaux. They now share responsibility for both their beautiful daughter Jeanne and the ten-acre estate established by Veronique’s Basque grandfather. Jerome, who is also of proud Basque heritage, oversees both vineyards and winemaking for the highly-acclaimed Pomerol Chateaux Le Gay and La Violette. He has implemented a similar disciplined vineyard regimen at nearby Haut Musset. The young couple recently completed construction of a new cellar behind the home they share with Veronique’s mom Etiennette, who serves as Haut Musset’s hospitality director and chef. Lalande-de-Pomerol is a satellite of Pomerol, directly to the north of its famous, smaller neighbor. The appellation covers approximately 2700 acres. Its soil profile includes a thin layer of sand and gravel over limestone, but Lalande also shares Pomerol’s signature crasse de fer, the local name for the iron-rich clay subsoil believed responsible for the distinct aromas and texture in the region’s Merlot dominated blends. Jerome and Veronique are currently transitioning to organic culture for both their vines and the fruit trees bordering the property. The single wine produced at Haut Musset is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, and extremely limited.
