Big Break Vineyard was named after a levee that collapsed over 80 years ago, flooding the local farmland. The combination of the extremely sandy, well-drained soils, dry-farmed century old, head-trained vines and the unique band of cooling air from the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers flavor Oakley’s best vineyard sites. In fact, this block of land is situated between the San Joaquin River and a Eucalyptus grove, creating a synergy of elements that add expression and power to these grapes. Wine maker notes Grapes grown in the hot sun and dry soil of Contra Costa County produce a unique wine with flavors of dark berries and spice. Enjoy with spicy lamb curry, chili rubbed steak, or chicken fricassee.
Other text Soil manager Bobby Cannard and Fred Cline are extremely dedicated to sustainable practices. Nothing is more important than how we treat our vines; the wine we make is a direct result of what we put into the ground. The Green String farming method developed by Fred and Bobby Cannard is a system that promotes and enhances biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. These methods minimize pollution from the air, soil, and water, and optimize the health and productivity of soil, plants, animals and people. We make every effort to reduce soil erosion, and other harmful ecological footprints. Our self-nourishing system of minimal human intervention yields excellent quality crops.
