Wine maker notes Inland from Monterey’s rugged coastline, yet still directly in the path of the ocean’s relentless influences, Carmel Road’s vineyards can be found nestled on the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains. No mountains hinder the flow of air from the Monterey Bay, allowing fog and chilly, moisture-laden winds to sweep over our vineyards daily, making this one of the coldest wine regions in California. The maritime climate combines with rocky, well-drained, alluvial gravel soils to produce wines with bright, vibrant fruit flavors.
Producer Located in the heart of California’s coastal Monterey County, in the windswept Salinas Valley, where the air is crisp and the way of life is relaxed and measured, Carmel Road Winery produces stunning Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from the region’s finest benchland vineyards. Most mornings, Carmel Road’s vineyards are shrouded in fog. By afternoon, a brisk wind blows from the Monterey Bay southward along the ridge tops and benchlands of Salinas Valley delivering cool maritime air. For years our region was considered too cold and windy to grow world-class grapes. Today, Monterey boasts some of the most highly-acclaimed AVAs in all of California; the wines of Carmel Road Winery exemplify the best that this extraordinary place has to offer. Today Monterey is considered one of the state’s premier appellations for cool climate varieties including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; the region’s ideal grape-growing climate is influenced by the cold waters of the nearby Pacific Ocean and lack of rainfall. This unique combination promotes more flavor and textural intensity in the fruit, adding complexities to the wines.
