Wine maker notes The La Jota Vineyard lies high upon a volcanic plateau, looking east over Napa Valley. Surrounded by pine, fir, oak and madrone trees, the estate stands out because of its cool, windswept climate and lean, volcanic soils. Grapes for our Merlot come from our Meadow blocks and provide the wine with a serious cocoa and chocolate character. We also source grapes for this wine from portions of the W. S. Keyes Vineyard, a mile down the road, where more hours of sunshine give this Merlot a pop of bright fruit character and broader tannins.
Producer La Jota Vineyard Co. is the historic Napa Valley winery founded in 1898 by early wine pioneer Fredrick Hess. Endowed with the original stone winery, La Jota produces a Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot from its winery Estate Vineyards and nearby W. S. Keyes EstateVineyard, nestled deep in a forested plateau atop Howell Mountain. With its windswept location high above the fog line, the climate is cool and even, with abundant sunlight. Austere, volcanic soils force the vines to struggle, yielding rich and concentrated flavors in the wines.
