The winery is presided over by Michel Magnien, a fourth generation winemaker. The Magniens are an old Burgundian family whose ties to the land run deep. From a very young age, Michel could be found in his father’s vineyards and not much has changed. Today you’re equally likely to find Michel in his fields, tending to his nearly 27-acre Domaine. Michel and his wife Dominique founded their Domaine in 1967 using fruit from recently acquired parcels. As they slowly expanded their holdings, that fruit continued to be used solely for their label. In 1988, Michel Magnien took over his father’s vineyards as a tenant farmer and continued to deliver the fruit from Domaine Bernard Magnien to the Morey-Saint-Denis Cooperative until 1993 when Frederic Magnien convinced his father to bottle the entire harvest themselves. Domaine Michel Magnien & Fils was born in 1998 and is truly a family affair. Michel continues to do what he loves, which is work in the fields, and Frederic manages vinification. Their estate holdings now stand at 27 acres and the vineyards span the entire range of classification from Grand Crus to AOC. The wines are vinified in a traditional manner with minimal new oak. The barrels are from Francois Freres and the wines are bottled without fining or filtration. These are wines that are generally approachable in their youth, but have plenty of stuffing and the complexity to age beautifully. Producer Domaine Michel Magnien has evolved into a Burgundy producer of a singular style and philosophy from their cellars located in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis. Michel Magnien was born in 1946 and worked alongside his father Bernard from a young age. The Magniens sold their grapes to the local cooperative until 1993 when his son Frederic joined the family business and persuaded his father to bottle the entire harvest by themselves. Frederic Magnien began experimenting with organic practices in the late 1990s and the entire production was certified biodynamic by Demeter in 2015. Frederic has also evolved the style of the wines and today elevage takes place in used oak and clay jars.
