The history of the vineyard Liebenberg dates back to the 14th century. Early records mention “lieb’nperig”, which later became “Liebenberg”. The views of this south- and southwest facing site are lined by stone-walls. Liebenberg is situated in the western part of Durnstein and has rather cooler influences compared to for example Kellerberg. Liebenberg is one of the most fascinating vineyards in the Wachau, various forms of paragneiss represent the parent rock for the soils. Dark amphibolite outcrops are scattered everywhere, and amphibolite is also found in the stone walls. Due to its meagre terrain, the wines are characterized by elegance and subtle minerality.

| Domane Wachau is a collection of 250 vintner families cultivating approximately 400 hectares of vines which comprise about one third of the Wachau vineyard area. The winery works very closely with the growers ensuring the best health of the vineyards and has instituted a vineyard quality assurance program. This sustainable vineyard management program includes measures of quality cultivation and is customized according to specific vineyards and vintage. Austria imposes very stringent wine laws, and the Wachau region goes beyond these with their quality categories of Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd to assure uncompromising quality. The Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stretching from the banks of the Danube, benefits from the river’s role as a climate regulator. Many of the vineyards are very steep and terraced with very old, dry stone walls. The very best vineyards, some of which are the most famous in Austria, are vinified separately to produce single vineyard Gruner Veltliners and Rieslings. |
