Vermouth

Are you looking to plan a dinner party that's really going to wow your guests? Creating a curated drink menu to accompany an excellent meal is sure to make an impression.

An aperitif is meant to be consumed before a meal to whet your appetite. That means it's also the perfect drink to whip up for guests as they start to arrive and mingle. Or if dinner parties aren't your thing, choose to drink an aperitif on your own, as it is a refreshing choice while you start to cook dinner. An aperitif can be enjoyed on its own or mixed into a cocktail, depending on your taste. Whatever your preferences, there are a few great aperitif brands that can suit your needs. We'll answer the basic questions about the drink, as well as some top aperitif brands and cocktails to make.

What Is an Aperitif?

An aperitif is generally a dry aromatic drink that is meant to be drunk before eating to aid digestion and prepare the palate for the flavors of the upcoming food. Aperitifs tend to lean on the bitter or herbal side and do not include high amounts of sugar or alcohol. Aperitifs include wines, fortified wines, and botanical or bitter liquors. They are often served mixed with carbonated drinks.

What Is the Difference Between an Aperitif and a Digestif?

You may have come across both of these terms before as they are very similar and are easy to get confused with each other. While the aperitif is meant to be drunk before eating, a digestif is usually made after a meal. Both drinks are known for usually including botanical flavors. However, a digestif usually has less acidity and higher alcohol content than its counterpart.

What Are Different Types of Aperitifs?

Aperitifs are a wide category in the drink world, and you can choose from a variety of aperitif brands to create a cocktail or enjoy on its own. Some of the most popular types you can find around the world are:

  • Aperol
  • Campari
  • Lillet
  • White wines
  • Gin

There are many more types of aperitifs out there that can be used as a pre-dinner drink. Though often overlooked, the aperitif offers a lot of flavors and is a great choice for a light beverage that will stimulate your appetite.

How Can You Enjoy an Aperitif?

There are many ways you can enjoy an aperitif while you munch on light appetizers or wait for your meal. Try out different aperitif brands poured over ice for a strong taste. You can also try one of the many different flavorful aperitif cocktails if you prefer.

For one of the most classic aperitif brands, try Aperol Orange. Its zesty orange flavor is not very sweet but is super refreshing when paired with fizzy drinks. Though this aperitif can be drunk with just a few ice cubes added, the Aperol spritz is a famously popular cocktail with just a few ingredients needed to make it. Add Aperol, Prosecco, and unflavored club soda to a glass with ice. Garnish with a fresh orange slice for added flavor.

With the well-known aperitif brand, Campari, you can create the classic Italian Negroni cocktail. Campari is notable for its bitter flavor and dark red coloring. To make the Negroni cocktail, simply add gin and a sweet Vermouth over ice and stir. It's typically garnished with an orange slice. Since all the components of this cocktail are alcohol, this is a pretty strong drink. However, it is perfect for some pre-dinner drinks. And is noted for its herby and rooty taste with notes of subtle fruitiness and sweetness thanks to the sweetness of the Vermouth and the orange slice.

Lillet Blanc is an aromatic French white wine that has been infused with botanicals. Though people do enjoy drinking the Lillet Blanc straight, either chilled in the fridge or with a couple of ice cubes added, it can be used in many cocktails. Try it out in the Vesper martini by adding gin, vodka, and the Lillet Blanc. Shake with ice until chilled. Garnish with a lemon twist. With this martini, the blend of flavors is often described as having a slightly bittersweet taste, with the botanicals balancing nicely with the vodka.
